Telecommunications company T Mobile is set to acquire US Cellular’s wireless communications, including its stores and customers, the company announced on Wednesday (28 May 2024).

The acquisition, valued at $4.4bn, will see T Mobile’s 5G deployed to Cellular’s North American customers, with a particular focus on rural and underserved areas. It is set to be the US’ largest 5G network to date.

T Mobile customers will also gain access to US Cellular’s current network through the deal.

Laurent Thrievel, current CEO of US Cellular, praised the acquisition.

“T-Mobile’s purchase and integration of US Cellular’s wireless operations will provide best-in-class connectivity to rural Americans through enhanced nationwide coverage and service offerings at more compelling price points,” stated Thrievel.

“The transaction provides our customers access to better coverage and speeds, as well as unlimited texting in more than 215 countries, content offers, device upgrades and other T-Mobile benefits,” he said.

T Mobile stated that it hoped the acquisition would benefit the choice given to mobile customers in the US and promote healthy competition.

“As customers from both companies will get more coverage and more capacity from our combined footprint, our competitors will be forced to keep up – and even more consumers will benefit,” said T Mobile CEO Mike Sievert.
