Holographic display company Swave Photonics has secured €27m ($28.27m) in Series A funding to advance its Holographic eXtended Reality (HXR) platform that creates holographic images to eliminate current challenges related to focal depth and eye tracking.
The Belgium-based company will use the investment to accelerate the development of the HXR platform, which aims to enhance the user experience for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered augmented reality (AR) smart glasses and heads-up displays.
Co-led by imec.xpand and SFPIM Relaunch, the funding round was received additional funds from new investors EIC Fund, IAG Capital Partners, and Murata Electronics North America. Existing investors Qbic Fund, PMV, imec, and Luminate also participated.
This follows Swave’s seed round that raised €10m in 2023 to facilitate the launch of its HXR technology and team expansion.
Swave’s HXR technology is known for utilising what it claims to be the world’s smallest pixel to create ‘high-quality’ 3D holographic images that offer a ‘reality-first user experience’ for AR smartglasses and heads-up displays.
These images are designed to interact with and adapt to the user’s environment, processed naturally by the human vision system through the company’s patented DynamicDepth technology.

“With Series A funding secured and silicon running at our partner fabs, we are on track to introduce product development kits and soon thereafter production devices.”
The firm’s HXR technology eliminates the need for expensive components such as waveguides or varifocal lenses, which are typically required for AR devices.

Currently, Swave holds 60 core patents for its technology. The firm was established in 2022 as spin-out of independent nanoelectronics R&D hub imec.
