The top five companies accounted for 25% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that BYD filed the most electric vehicles patents within the technology industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 144 electric vehicles-related patents in the quarter, compared with 151 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Huawei Investment with 65 electric vehicles patent filings, Toyota Motor (51 filings), and Samsung SDI (23 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 27% share of total patent filings
The largest share of electric vehicles related patent filings in the technology industry in Q3 2024 was in China with 27%, followed by the US (24%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by China was 15% lower than the 42% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
