OpenAI and Meta Platforms are in discussions with Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries for potential partnerships to expand their AI footprint in the country, The Information has reported.
OpenAI executives have reportedly engaged in multiple talks with Reliance in recent months, aiming for a product and sales partnership.
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that OpenAI is interested in leveraging Reliance’s business divisions, including its wireless carrier Jio, to distribute its AI offerings, potentially featuring ChatGPT.
The social media giant is also said to be vying for a partnership with Reliance to develop new AI ventures, the news publication added citing a Meta employee involved in the discussions as saying.
Furthermore, an alliance with Reliance could serve as a strategic move for both OpenAI and Meta to strengthen relations with the Indian government, which has expressed concerns over the dominance of foreign AI firms potentially sidelining local enterprises.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also considering reducing the ChatGPT subscription price down from $20.
However, it remains unclear whether this proposal has been part of the ongoing conversations with Reliance.
According to the report, Reliance has explored the idea of selling OpenAI’s models to its enterprise customers through an application programming interface.
Discussions have also covered the prospect of hosting and running OpenAI’s models locally to ensure Indian customer data remains within the country.
The Indian conglomerate also discussed operating Meta and OpenAI models in a planned 3GW data centre at Jamnagar in the Indian state of Gujarat, which is projected to be the largest globally.
Earlier in March 2025, Meta began testing its first in-house chip designed specifically for training AI systems.
