Over a quarter (27%) of Gen Z job applicants do not mention their AI usage during job interviews, wrongly believing that hiring managers do not see the value of AI skills.

The research, from YouGov, found that around 58% of Gen Z job candidates would avoid the topic of AI completely if it were not mentioned in the job posting.

Matt Monette, country lead of UK and Ireland at HR company Deel who commissioned the research, suggested that candidates need to view AI skills as a personal selling point.

“Today, job seekers are now also having to grapple with the extent to which they should play up their AI skills in interviews,” he said.

“It’ll be important for hiring managers to foster an open and honest discussion around the use of AI in the workplace,” Monette added.

YouGov also found that there was a clear discrepancy between how job candidates and hiring managers viewed AI technology.

Around a third of hiring decision makers currently use AI in their HR practices.

Out of the hiring managers who did not currently use AI, over 20% stated that they were planning to implement AI within the next year.

While this is fairly low, YouGov and Deel’s research suggests that hiring managers overwhelmingly saw AI as a positive for their work and practices.

Over 60% of hiring managers believed that AI could benefit HR and hiring tasks such as salary negotiation, checking employment regulations, payroll management and benefits administration.

According to its executive briefing on AI, research and analysis company GlobalData forecast the total AI market to exceed a value of $1,037bn by 2030, achieving a CAGR of 39% from 2023.
