Just 7% of US citizens answered that they use ChatGPT daily despite generative AI’s media and funding hype.

A study by Oxford University and the Reuters Institute investigated how generative AI tools were used across the US, UK, France and Japan.

The US had the most avid users of ChatGPT, with only 2% of UK and French respondents stating that they used ChatGPT daily. In Japan, only 1% of people who took part in the research used ChatGPT every day.

The results differed despite a similar level of awareness of generative AI in each country.

Around 30-20% of respondents in each country stated that they had heard of generative AI and that ChatGPT was the most widely used in comparison to other AI tools.

Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot were the second and third most popular AI tools used.

In terms of use cases, 28% of respondents stated that they primarily used AI to create images or other media.

Despite generative AI’s misinformation fears, only 5% of respondents stated that they had used AI to retrieve news or current events.

This was in spite of 66% of respondents answering that the media industry was going to be heavily impacted by generative AI technology in the next 12 months.

The study also found that personal use of generative AI was currently more widespread than use by businesses.

Across the countries surveyed, an average 27% of respondents stated that they had used generative AI at least once in their personal life. While 21% answered that they had used it in school or work.

A 2024 tech sentiment survey conducted by research and analysis company GlobalData reported that only 20% of businesses had a high adoption rate of AI into their workflows, despite around 50% of businesses believing that AI would imminently disrupt their sector.

By 2030, GlobalData forecasts that the total AI market will exceed a value of $1,037bn, achieving a CAGR of 39% from 2023.
