UK think tank, the Centre for Long-Term Resilience (CLTR), has released a report calling on the government to increase resources for the monitoring of AI safety incidents.

According to the report, there have been over 10,000 AI safety incidents recorded by news outlets since 2014.

CLTR is calling for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) to expand dedicate resources to include a specific function that focuses on monitoring, investigating, and responding to AI related incidents.

CLTR released the report ahead of July’s UK General Election in the hope that the next UK government will introduce a more robust AI safety incident monitoring strategy.

In November 2023, the UK government launched the AI Safety Institute to ensure greater protection against the risks of AI.

CLTR’s report also outlined a “concerning gap” in the UK’s regulation of AI which could have a serious impact on the UK public. There have been incidents of abusive advice given by AI chatbots, such as when an AI chatbot encouraged a Belgian man to end his life, in 2023.

AI can also the potential to hinder government work, such as leading to miscarriages of justice or mistakenly removing access to benefits, according to the report.

CLTR believes that the UK government should consult experts and commission them to ensure that there are regular updated insights into AI incidents.

AI is at the forefront of both the Conservative Party and Labour Party’s manifestos, as they both attempt to strike a balance between greater integration of AI into UK sectors and greater AI safety.
