Ditch the slippers and put on your running shoes. Swap the burger for a salad and turn off the television and get outside – National Fitness Day is here!
Approximately one in four adults in the UK is clinically obese. Likewise, 80 percent of British people are failing to meet the government’s exercise guidelines.
To help combat our laziness, the énergie Group started National Fitness Day back in 2011 to encourage the nation to get off of their backsides.
Now ran by non-profit health organisation ukactive, gyms, clubs and parks across the UK open their doors each year to encourage everyone of all sizes, ages and ability to take part in exercise.
National Fitness Day 2017 will be celebrated tomorrow, Wednesday 27 September.

By GlobalDataUsing the National Fitness Day 2017 activity finder, it’s possible to find something to do in any part of the nation.
However, if spin classes and sweaty gyms puts you off burning a few calories, it might be worth turning to one of these handy fitness apps for a little motivation:
Zombies, Run!
Nothing gets us moving faster than fear. Zombie, Run! aims to use the fight or flight response to encourage us to exercise.
Part workout tool, part interactive story, Zombies, Run! brings some fun to your run by pitting you against an advancing horde of flesh-eaters in over 200 missions.
Collect supplies, build a base and (most importantly) RUN.
Seven
National Fitness Day 2017 is technically only a day long, but Seven will extend it by another six months and 30 days.
This app doesn’t encourage you to drastically alter your lifestyle. You don’t need to go vegan or dedicate two hours a day to the gym. All you need is seven minutes to spare and dedication.
Seven encourages users to perform seven minute routines each day for seven months. All of the exercises can be completed at home.
If you miss a day, you lose a life. With just three to spare a month, Seven helps users to exercise consistently.
Charity Miles
If self-improvement isn’t enough to get you exercising, perhaps the ability to help others is.
Guilt tripping for a worthy cause, Charity Miles persuades users to exercise by promising to donate to charity for each mile completed. For every mile walked or ran, 25 cents will be donated to a charity of your choice.
As well as tracking your fitness progress, you will also be able to see just how much good you have done for those in need.
Carrot Fit
Sadistic, judgemental and insulting are just some of the words used to describe Carrot Fit, a health monitoring app with a twist.
There are plenty of reasons why we hate exercising. It’s sweaty, tiring and time-consuming. It’s also very, very boring.
Carrot Fit hopes to change that using its rudely encouraging artificial intelligent personal trainer, who will body shame you until you’re thin.
Run an Empire
Rule the land that you run on in Run an Empire, a strategy fitness game that encourages you to exercise just so you can be better than everyone else.
Similar to games like Pokémon Go, Run an Empire turns the real world into a playing field.
Portions of the map are marked as “territories”. You must complete a successful lap around the territory to capture it. However, it doesn’t end there – you then have to fight to keep other runners/rulers from taken over your territories.
