The global technology industry noticed a 1.6% drop in IT hiring activity in September 2021 over the previous month, led by Cognizant Technology Solutions 12.92% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The technology industry’s overall hiring activity increased 0.84% when compared with August 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 33.04% share of the global technology industry’s hiring activity in September 2021, down 0.49% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2021 were 3.57% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 7.52% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 76.86% emerged as the top IT occupation in the technology hiring activity in September 2021, a 10.44% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 9.32% in September 2021, down 11.55% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 5.93% share in September 2021, a decline of 5.23% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 4.29% share in September 2021 and a drop of 7.28% over August 2021.
Top five technology companies by recruitment activity in September 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 11.8% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global technology industry during September 2021 over August 2021.
Cognizant Technology Solutions posted 9,791 IT jobs in September 2021 and registered a drop of 11.97% over the previous month, followed by Accenture with 7,738 jobs and a 34.1% decline. International Business Machines with 7,240 IT jobs and Dell Technologies with 2,574 jobs, recorded a 26.26% growth and a 14.46% drop, respectively, while Nippon Telegraph and Telephone recorded a 13.05% rise with 2,435 job postings during September 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in technology industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global technology IT hiring activity in September 2021 with a 44.6% share, which marked an 11.27% rise over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 38.87%, registering a 27.26% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 13.98% share and a 2.75% drop over August 2021.
In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.08% and a month-on-month drop of 20.49%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.05%, registering a 27.27% decrease over the previous month.
