Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made headlines a few years back when he purchased 700 acres of land on Kauai, Hawaii’s fourth biggest island.
For just $260m, you could be just like the social media billionaire.
35 percent of Molokai Island, Hawaii has been put up for sale.
For just over a quarter of a billion dollars, you can have access to your own private 20 mile stretch of sandy beach. Likewise, you will also grab not one, but two ranches.
However, there is a small catch.
The current owners have warned that you might struggle to get planning permission from the island’s unaccepting residents.

By GlobalDataLuckily for you, there are plenty of alternatives to take a look at if you’re in the market for an island of your own, free from pesky residents that have called the island home for generations.
Most expensive islands for sale
If you’re in the market for a private island to call home, money is obviously no object. Therefore, you might as well go for the most expensive option currently available.
Pumpkin Key
Currently on the market for a measly $95m, Pumpkin Key is the most expensive private island on the market at the moment.
Located just 10 minutes from Miami, Florida (if you have access to a helicopter), Pumpkin Key comes complete with a three bedroom beach home and two caretaker cottages for your staff. Given its close proximity to Miami’s Ocean Reef island, you don’t have to worry about a lack of clean water and electricity.
Likewise, with 26 acres of land to build on, there is plenty of space for future development.
Hall’s Pond Cay
This huge 460 acre Bahamian island could be yours for $62m, providing the idyllic island paradise that everybody dreams of owning.
The island is undeveloped, but plans have been approved to add an airstrip, heli-pad and sea-plane ramp if you desire. Likewise, if you can afford to buy a private island in the middle of the Bahamas, I’m guessing you can afford to build a house on it.
If green hills and white beaches aren’t enough to convince you, perhaps being able to call Johnny Depp your neighbour will. The actor owns Little Hall’s Pond Cay just next door.
Cheapest islands for sale
Holiday islands aren’t only for multi-millionaires. In fact, islands have sold in Scotland for less than the price of a parking space in London.  However, you can expect more rainy days in than beach breaks.
Adventure Island
This 3 acre island located in the middle of the Mississippi River is the cheapest private island on the market at a cost of $39,900.
The island is currently undeveloped and permission has only been granted to build a small 150 square foot structure. However, you will gain access to your own sandy beach. Likewise, if your money stretches far enough, you could potentially grab your own private swimming area too. Just remember to bring a tent.
Hemlow Island
If you want something even cheaper, you could settle for a shared island.
2 acre plots are currently being sold on the Canadian island of Hemlow from $22,323. The island has everything that you want from a private island – nature, nice beaches and its only a short boat ride away from mainland Canada.
The downside is that you have to share it with a load of other people.
Famous islands for sale
The only want to flaunt your wealth more than buying a $100m island is by buying a $100m island off of somebody rich and famous. Luckily, with celebrities quickly tiring of the island life, there are plenty of famous islands for sale on the market.
Motu Tane
Located nearby the French Polynesia island of Bora Bora, Motu Tane is well known in the area as once being home to famed French explorer Paul-Emile Victor.
Victor settled down to a quiet life on the island and you can too. If you have $50m to spend, that is.
For your money, you will get a guest house that sleeps up to 20 people and an island that offers all of the good parts of the island experience – notably nice beaches and lots of coconuts.
Petra Island
You would think properties developed by famous architects sell fairly well. However, nobody seems to want this island home designed by leading 20th century designer Frank Lloyd Wright.
For $14.9m, Wright’s Petra Island can be yours.
Located just a short helicopter ride from Manhattan, the 11 acre island is adorned with a 5,000 square foot architectural masterpiece that doubled up as a great holiday home.
Moveable islands for sale
You could get a luxury yacht to go with your private island, or you could simply buy an island that doubles up as a yacht. Yes, that is a thing.
Amillarah Private Islands
Most private islands require a lot of work before they reflect the grand vision that you had in mind when you started your search.
However, Amillarah offers to custom build you your dream island for as little as $10m.
Leading designer Koen Olthuis will design your floating escape from scratch. You will be allowed to customise the shape, size and style of your new home.
With locations in Miami, New York, Dubai and the Maldives, the choice is yours where you pitch up. Better yet, with a floating island, you can always relocate if you get bored of being in one place.
Migaloo Private Islands
If you have $2bn going spare, you could always become the first person to splash out on a Migaloo man-made island.
Well, it’s not really an island. It’s more of a village built on a submarine. However, it does come complete with everything that you will ever need to live a happy and secluded life.
Features include pools, spas, helipads, movie theatres and a shark-feeding station. However, for such a high price, Migaloo are probably quite happy to build you whatever you want.
