US technology major IBM has announced the acquisition of Manta Software to bolster its data and artificial intelligence (AI) governance capabilities.
The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Set up in 2016, Manta is a data lineage platform that provides enterprises greater visibility about their data.
IBM said the rising complexity of data and the integration of AI into business operations have made data quality and explainability crucial components of business strategies and systems.
According to IBM’s 2023 CEO research, concerns regarding the origin or lineage of data are the biggest obstacle to the adoption of generative AI.
With the Prague, Czech Republic-based company’s platform, businesses can access a detailed map of data flows, transformations, dependencies, and sources, IBM noted.

By GlobalDataThe technology company expects the Manta acquisition to complement its watsonx.ai, watsonx.data and watsonx.governance.
Manta counts companies such as BMO, T-Mobile, JB Hunt, and SCP Health among its clients.
In a post, IBM Software vice president of product management, data and AI Tarun Chopra explained: “Manta’s data lineage capabilities help increase transparency within watsonx so businesses can determine whether the right data was used for their AI models and systems, where it originated, how it has evolved and any discrepancies in data flows.
“By providing an audit trail, Manta can help businesses discover and anonymize sensitive data to lower risk of exposure and regulatory violations.”
The acquisition, which is IBM’s eighth acquisition in 2023, builds on the existing partnership between IBM and Manta since June 2022.
IBM has added around 30 companies since Arvind Krishna took over as CEO in April 2020, enhancing the company’s strengths in AI and hybrid clouds.
In June 2023, IBM signed a deal to buy software company Apptio in a deal valued at $4.6bn.
