Hyundai Motor Group is exploring a partnership with tech giant Google to enhance its connected car technologies, reports KED Global.
The collaboration aims to advance Hyundai’s future mobility solutions, including autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles, and connected cars.
Hyundai Autoever, the group’s navigation system provider, is seeking to utilise Google’s data resources to improve its high-definition maps for Level 3 self-driving cars, the sources said.
Hyundai Autoever, which supplies navigation systems to Hyundai Motor and Kia, currently relies on data from HERE Technologies and TomTom.
A potential partnership with Google could provide Hyundai with access to extensive data from Google Maps, potentially creating significant advancements in navigation map technology.
This initiative is part of Hyundai’s strategy to collaborate with global tech giants for effective big data management in developing future mobility technologies.

In January, Hyundai Autoever partnered with Mapbox to develop 3D navigation map GPT technology.
Hyundai also joined the Overture Maps Foundation, alongside tech companies such as Amazon Web Services, Meta Platform, and Microsoft, to work on interoperable open map data, which could reduce reliance on Google and Apple maps and boost autonomous car development.
Like Hyundai Motor, other major global automakers are actively pursuing partnerships with technology companies.
They find it more effective and efficient to leverage cloud services, AI, and advanced telecommunications networks developed by tech companies, rather than developing these technologies in-house.
In June 2023, Mercedes-Benz tested ChatGPT in its vehicle production, and General Motors partnered with Microsoft to advance self-driving cars.
Meanwhile, Tesla agreed with Baidu to develop maps and navigation for its self driving system in China.
