Luxembourg-based Freyr Battery, a developer of environmentally friendly lithium-ion-based battery cell production capacity, has established its first US technology centre in Boston, Massachusetts. The opening forms part of the company’s US expansion plan and will support efforts to recruit key talent, strengthen strategic partnerships and form clean, localised battery supply chains.

Freyr Battery has a long-term partnership with 24M Technologies, a battery start-up based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company is also collaborating with joint venture partners from Kansas-based venture capital company Koch Strategic Platforms to develop Giga America – its first US gigafactory.

In a press release, chief executive officer Tom Einar Jensen commented: “The US is a critical strategic market for Freyr. With the recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the US is on a path to accelerate the buildout of clean, localised battery supply chains, which dovetails with our long-term strategy. As we proceed with site selection for Giga America, establishing our first US location in close proximity to our partners at 24M will enhance technology development, collaboration, personnel development and strategic coordination.”

Freyr Battery intends to install 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cell capacity by 2025, 100GWh of annual capacity by 2028 and 200GWh by 2030.
