The top five companies accounted for 18% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Snap filed the most metaverse patents within the technology industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 162 metaverse-related patents in the quarter, compared with 161 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung Electronics with 127 metaverse patent filings, Magic Leap (99 filings), and Alphabet (60 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 51% share of total patent filings
The largest share of metaverse related patent filings in the technology industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 51%, followed by China (10%) and Japan (4%). The share represented by the US was 17% higher than the 34% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
