Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the technology industry was 35,923 in Q3 2024, versus 58,135 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 7% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Alphabet filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the technology industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 708 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 814 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung Electronics with 586 artificial intelligence patent filings, Microsoft (416 filings), and Huawei Investment (393 filings) in Q3 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 42% share of total patent filings

The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the technology industry in Q3 2024 was in China with 42%, followed by the US (25%) and Japan (2%). The share represented by China was 20% lower than the 62% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
