A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11868022B2) discloses a novel crystal structure comprising strontium tetraborate (SrB4O7) or lead tetraborate (PbB4O7) with uniform domains exhibiting periodically alternating polarity of the crystal axis. This unique volume periodic structure enables quasi phase-matching (QPM) for nonlinear optical applications. The crystal can be utilized as a nonlinear optical element for converting a fundamental frequency to higher harmonics such as second or third harmonic generation, higher harmonic generations, and optical parametric interactions.

The patent also details a method for fabricating the periodic structure in the SrB4O7 or PbB4O7 crystal, involving surface patterning, disturbance generation to invert crystal polarity, and high-temperature melt techniques for crystal growth. The process includes steps like metallization, photoresist application, mask alignment, and external force application to achieve the desired domain structure with alternating polarity. The resulting crystal structure features uniformly dimensioned domains with parallel walls deviating by less than 1 micron over a 10 mm distance, enhancing its optical properties for efficient QPM utilization in various applications within the visible to deep ultraviolet light range.
