By GlobalDataI am truly Viennese, and I love the city.
In fact, I cannot think of a better place to live! This city has so much to offer in terms of music, culture, entertainment, dining, shopping – the list is almost endless. Assuming that you do not have as much time as I do, I have prepared this insider list with all of my personal and “subjectively biased” favorite places.
BEST RESTAURANTS
Schweizerhaus
Cuisine: Viennese
Prater 116, 1020
This beer garden on the Prater is famous for authentic Viennese Food (Stelze!) and beer served in a very casual setting. There’s a great outdoor sitting area under shady old trees! My favorites on the menu are the handmade potato chips called ‘Rohscheiben’.
Procacci
Cuisine: Italian
Goettweihergasse 2, 1010
Italian style in the Austrian capital, excellent food with traditional Italian specialities. A place to see and to be seen!
BEST SHOPPING
Horn
For: Luxury leather goods
Mahlerstraße 5, 1010
An excellent Viennese leather manufacturer designing great handbags and purses, as well as very elegant briefcases for the modern businesswoman.
Muehlbauer Headwear
For: Chic headgear and fashion
Seilergasse 10, 1010
A family company founded more than a hundred years ago. Very stylish hats and clothing.
NOT TO MISS
Museumsquartier
Museumsplatz 1-5, 1070
The Musemsquartier is a place of diversity. To begin with, it is an art space with a lot of programs for different movements and styles. Renowned museums and exhibition halls are located in close proximity to small cultural initiatives; modern classics meet young artists of the new millennium.
Karmelitermarkt
Leopoldsgasse & Hollandstrasse, 1020
This marketplace is one of the oldest in Vienna, located in the 2nd district (where I grew up). Interesting food, outlandish fashion and contemporary art are transforming the Karmelitermarkt district into one of Vienna’s most exciting neighborhoods. Very busy on Saturday with local farmers who sell their excellent produce.
SPECIAL SUMMER TIP
Old Danube
The Viennese recreation area close to the city center. We use it to relax, play and enjoy sports, or to spend pleasurable hours at beach cafes, bars and restaurants. Plenty of fun outdoor dining with a Caribbean feel.”
