Boomi is a US-based company that specialises in connecting applications, interfaces, data sources, and web services to help businesses simplify their business processes.

Application programming interface (API) has played a key role in connecting applications and data, and increasingly, this will extend to AI models. The growing interest in generative AI (GenAI) is therefore a boon to Boomi.

AI agent framework

At the recent Boomi World 2024 event, the company introduced its AI agent framework which is a set of integration and no-code development capabilities that allow enterprises to run AI agents for various integration and automation scenarios. The company wants to provide a unified platform with APIs, applications, data and AI models. It also recognises that not every company needs to build their own large language model (LLM). Instead, Boomi’s vision is to give enterprises access to a wide variety of AI agents that fulfil specific tasks. Through an agent garden architecture, enterprises will be able to select the agents and then train and ground them using their own data to meet their business objectives.

The agent garden will include Boomi-developed agents, third-party agents as well as agents developed and customised by enterprises themselves. It has introduced four AI agents developed in-house including:

  • Boomi Answers: Agent for providing prescriptive help
  • Boomi DataDetective: Agent for classifying data fields, protecting sensitive data like personally identifiable information (PII), and tracking where data is being moved
  • Boomi DesignGen: Agent for autonomously building integrations, data models, and APIs
  • Boomi Scribe: Agent for automatically documenting existing and built-by-AI integrations

As for third-party agents, Boomi demonstrated Boomi FinTalk powered by Vianai, a conversational AI for finance. Vianai helps companies build and deploy GenAI applications on structured and unstructured data while eliminating issues related to hallucination.

Boomi benefits

Through Boomi, users can enable the Vianai agent to connect sources of data in ERP systems, databases, customer data lakes and other data to discover and analyse financial data and trends in real-time. Through an OEM agreement, Boomi is embedding Vianai technology into its platform powered by Boomi GPT (a conversational AI engine within the Boomi platform). This allows customers to easily access the technology to gain financial insights by having a conversation with the AI agent.

Another example includes using Kalpa AI, a startup offering a video automation platform to send personalised video messages leveraging AI. By hosting Kalpa AI within the agent garden, sales and marketing teams can generate personalised marketing video for a customer based on the data in the CRM, connected through the Boomi platform. While there has been great curiosity in tapping the power of the latest large language models (LLMs), enterprises are realising that in many instances either a small model or an AI agent would be more practical in achieving the desired outcomes. Boomi’s AI agent framework lowers the barrier for businesses to harness the power of AI.

Boomi is not alone in building an AI agent garden or an agent marketplace. With a myriad of AI agents developed for different tasks, the concept of a marketplace is becoming attractive. Google Cloud for example, is promoting its Vertex AI model garden which now has over 150 foundation models. Google as well as its customers are leveraging these models to create many AI agents for different tasks. The hyperscalers’ marketplaces are also hosting solutions for AI agents, for example, Cognigy’s AI Agent solutions for customer service is available via AWS marketplace. Alibaba Cloud has launched a marketplace of over 200 AI-powered agents for its DingTalk workplace communication platform that provide customers many productivity tools and industry-specific services.

While this means that Boomi is in good company in pursuing the AI agent marketplace approach, giving it first-mover advantages, it also means that it is entering a fast-evolving space. The ability to attract and grow the number of AI agents is crucial but it is also important for users to find the right agents and develop customisation.
