The birth of Open AI Chat-GPT signaled a new era for artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI, namely large language models (LLMs) that are trained on vast amounts of data and can conversationally answer questions.
While Chat-GPT is trained on general data and can answer questions on everything from business plans to historical musical composers, sector-specific LLMs pose significant advantages.
A sector-specific LLM—such as the ones created for the medical or legal fields—is trained using credible data from each specific industry. This allows them to provide more accurate and in-depth responses to questions. As individuals in the aforementioned industries must be trusted sources of authority, LLMs must prioritise the reliability and validity of their outputs.
Industry-specific LLMs
Google’s Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 (LLMs specific to the medical industry) were trained on medical texts as well as images. This allows them to perform functions such as analysing an image of a chest X-ray or answering questions with accuracy comparable to a human clinician. The robust training of Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 has allowed them to gain accuracy rates of 67.6% and 86.5%, respectively, in the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). They were the first AI models to pass the examination (which has a pass rate of 60%).
Similar developments in the legal field are seeing industry-specific texts being harnessed to help construct LLMs. Legaltech company Evisort has created the first contract-specific LLM. The model was trained on millions of legal documents, allowing it to analyse contracts (such as by asking whether a contract can be terminated early), draft clauses, and more.
The future
While success is being seen in the medical and legal fields, other industries are also making use of sector-specific LLMs (such as BloombergGPT’s use in the financial industry). As these models are refined and made more accurate and valid, they may offer consumers new and reliable methods of quickly obtaining information and advice and offer professionals in these fields an easy way to double-check their knowledge or enhance their services.
