RingCentral recently introduced RingCentral AI Assistant, a component of RingEX, the company’s team communication and collaboration platform.

RingCentral AI Assistant can generate real-time call notes and summaries; draft, refine, and translate text messages across six languages; catch up users on group chats; define meeting action items; and create real-time live transcriptions and closed captioning for calls and video meetings. Currently, AI Assistant is available in the US. An international debut is planned for early 2025, as is the rollout of more features.

If RingCentral AI Assistant sounds familiar that is because it is not in fact new. It has merely emerged from an early access preview involving select customers that had been taking place for months, a fact that was not made readily apparent.

Creative spin on RingCentral AI Assistant

However, the creative spin RingCentral has put on the ‘introduction’ of AI Assistant by no means diminishes the quality of the offer or RingCentral’s competitive stature. With the offer, RingCentral has joined the ranks of competitors that offer personal AI assistants such as Microsoft’s Copilot, Zoom’s AI Companion, and Cisco with the Cisco AI Assistant in Webex Suite. Like those rivals, RingCentral has made it a point of packing its AI assistant with features that will truly increase productivity.

By affixing a zero-price tag, RingCentral is mimicking the pricing strategy adopted by Cisco and Zoom, and in the process, distinguishing themselves from Microsoft and Google who charge a fee for their AI agents. In general, like its peers, RingCentral has remained very aggressive in adding AI-infused features to both its team collaboration platform and its customer experience platform (called RingCX).

The need for speed

Mirroring a growing trend, it has also implemented features that link team collaboration and customer experience. For all its strengths, the one glaring weakness RingCentral needs to address is timing. RingCentral has often played the role of follower rather than being first to market when launching capabilities.
