OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told some shareholders that the AI company is considering changing its governance structure to a wholly for-profit business, The Information reported on Friday (14 June).

If the change goes ahead, the company’s non-profit board would cease to have control over corporate decision making.

Altman said the board is considering a for-profit corporation, similar to the structure of Elon Musk-owned rival xAI and Amazon-backed Anthropic, according to the report, citing someone familiar with the matter.

The OpenAI CEO said the restructuring discussions remain fluid and other directors in the company may ultimately choose a different route, according to The Information.

Musk announced in February that he was suing the ChatGPT-maker and Altman for a breach of contract, claiming they purposefully abandoned the startup’s original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity over profit.

The lawsuit, which was filed late on Thursday (29 February), alleges that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman approached Musk to create an open-source, non-profit company.
