A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11968744B2) discloses a method and apparatus for managing access and mobility functions in a network. The method involves receiving a message containing a first Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)-User Equipment (UE) identifier from a Radio Access Network (RAN), retrieving UE context information using this identifier, generating a second AMF-UE identifier for a different AMF, and transmitting this identifier back to the RAN. This process aims to facilitate seamless handover and management of UE context between different AMFs within the network.

Furthermore, the apparatus described in the patent includes a receiver for obtaining the initial AMF-UE identifier, a processor for retrieving UE context information and generating the second AMF-UE identifier, and a transmitter for sending this identifier back to the RAN. The apparatus also supports the transmission of N2 messages via an N2 interface to the RAN, with the second AMF-UE identifier included in these messages. By efficiently managing UE context information and enabling the identification of UEs across different AMFs, this technology enhances the overall performance and reliability of network operations, particularly in scenarios involving handovers and mobility management.
