VOXX International has been granted a patent for an accent lighting system for vehicles. The system includes a light module that can be inserted into a cupholder and a transmitter that wirelessly delivers power to the light module. The system uses electromagnetic induction to create current in the light module, illuminating the cupholder without the need for electrical penetrations that could cause fluid leakage. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11752934B1) describes an accent lighting system for vehicles. The system includes a light module that can be inserted into a cupholder in the vehicle. The light module consists of a housing with an internal chamber, a first inductive coil, and a printed circuit board assembly with multiple light sources. The first inductive coil delivers power to the light sources, and a diffuser allows the emitted light to pass through. A cover is placed over the printed circuit board assembly.

The system also includes a transmitter with a second inductive coil that wirelessly delivers power to the first inductive coil, eliminating the need for electrical communication through penetrations in the cupholder. A control module is positioned between the transmitter and a power source in the vehicle, allowing power to flow from the power source to the transmitter. The first and second inductive coils create current in the light module through electromagnetic induction, energizing the light sources and illuminating the cupholder.

The housing of the light module includes a recess with a shoulder that supports the cover, positioning the diffuser radially outward. The light sources are secured to the printed circuit board assembly and spaced radially inward from the diffuser to prevent visual perception of the light sources. An adhesive member is positioned between the housing and the printed circuit board assembly to inhibit relative movement.

Another embodiment of the accent lighting system includes a console with a cupholder and a light module that can be inserted into the cupholder. The light module consists of a first inductive member and a diffuser that collects and distributes light. A transmitter located externally of the cupholder communicates wirelessly with the first inductive member to power the light module.

The light module includes at least one light source in electrical communication with the first inductive member, which can be an array of LEDs. A printed circuit board assembly is in electrical communication with the first inductive member and overlies it. An adhesive member receives the first inductive member and is positioned between the housing and the printed circuit board assembly to prevent movement. The diffuser is a component of the housing and is formed integrally with it.

In yet another embodiment, the accent lighting system includes a control module in electrical communication with a transmitter and a power source. The transmitter communicates wirelessly with a light module inserted into the cupholder. The control module varies the operation of the light module by sending signals through the transmitter. The light module includes a diffuser that matches the contour of the cupholder and collects and distributes light generated by at least one light source positioned radially inward of the diffuser.
