Global creative platform Shutterstock has announced new AI-powered editing features that can be used to transform its library of over 700 million stock images.

The company said the new AI tools are leveraging its priority access to the latest OpenAI technology, which supports the integration of synthetic editing capabilities.

Shutterstock’s customers will be able to use generative AI to not only create new content but also edit and transform any image on the platform’s library.

The company says artists will be compensated if their images are licensed after editing. However, it states that AI-generated or edited content will not be accepted as a submission for licensing on the platform.

“This is an unprecedented offering in the stock photography industry,” said Shutterstock CEO Paul Hennessy.

“Now, creatives have everything they need to craft the perfect content for any project with AI-powered design capabilities that you can use to edit stock images within Shutterstock’s library, presenting infinite possibilities to make stock your own.”

The company recently joined the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), an association founded in November 2019 by ADOBE, the New York Times and X (formerly known as Twitter).

The association aims to address misleading information online by enforcing technical standards of certifying the source and history of media content.

Shutterstock says it will use the CAI’s standards in its AI capabilities, including its OpenAI DALL-E powered AI image generator, to help protect users with verifiable content.

The launch of Shutterstock’s AI editing suite comes as image platforms battle it out in the generative AI race.

In September, rival platform Getty Images released its own AI image generator in partnership with AI computing giant NVIDIA
