The top five companies accounted for 11% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Casio Computer filed the most edtech patents within the technology industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 18 edtech-related patents in the quarter, compared with 2 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Toyota Motor with 6 edtech patent filings, Microsoft (5 filings), and Pearson (4 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 36% share of total patent filings
The largest share of edtech related patent filings in the technology industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 36%, followed by China (22%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by the US was 19% higher than the 17% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
