The top five companies accounted for 12% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Microsoft filed the most cloud patents within the technology industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 61 cloud-related patents in the quarter, compared with 73 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Dell Technologies with 59 cloud patent filings, Oracle (39 filings), and International Business Machines (39 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 61% share of total patent filings
The largest share of cloud related patent filings in the technology industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 61%, followed by China (17%) and the UK (1%). The share represented by the US was 38% higher than the 24% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
