After blazing onto our screens a few weeks ago, Star Trek: Discovery has proven successful. After a rocky development that saw a showrunner step down, and the budget spiral out of control, Star Trek: Discovery defied the naysayers to become a major hit.
Unfortunately, as the series is streaming-only we can’t know exact viewing figures. However, the first two episodes did air on television in the USA and won an audience of about 9.6m. In comparison, it took Game Of Thrones 7 seasons to reach that number on any single episode. Admittedly, Game Of Thrones aired on a cable network. Star Trek: Discovery didn’t. Still, it’s a great effort from a fledgling series.
After that, it’s difficult to gauge Star Trek: Discovery‘s exact success. We know that it has been the biggest traffic driver for CBS All Access ever. The Netflix-style online platform said it doubled its subscriber-base as a result of Star Trek: Discovery.
Obviously, in the rest of the world, the series has aired on Netflix. They don’t release viewing figures so the exact number of fans is a bit of a mystery. However, if we feed in the same metrics we used to work out the most popular Netflix series of all time, Star Trek: Discovery comes out as the fifth most popular Netflix series ever, ahead of fan-favourite Daredevil. After only six episodes, that’s one hell of a feat!
Safe to say, this series is seriously popular.
Star Trek Discovery Season 2:
All that is a long way of saying that no one should be surprised to hear CBS confirmed Star Trek: Discovery Season Two today.

They did not confirm when the second series would air or who would be involved. However, it’s a show of faith in the sci-fi series that bodes well for the future.
Still, although we don’t know how far away Season Two is, there’s plenty more of Season One to enjoy. The series will be broadcasting on CBS All Access and Netflix until mid-November. It will then take a short hiatus before returning in January 2018 for the final six episodes.
Considering production began in January on Star Trek: Discovery and the series saw a September release, the same seems likely for Season Two. We can probably expect to see it in late summer/early autumn 2018.
It’s also possible that original creator of Star Trek: Discovery, Bryan Fuller could come back too. He had to drop out of showrunning duties last year because of schedule clashes with American Gods. Perhaps this time around a more helpful schedule could bring him back to the show.
For the time being though, it’s good to see that Star Trek Discovery Season 2 is on its way to our screens!
